COURSE TITLE: Art
TEACHER: Ms. Hein
TEXT: Art: A Community Connection Replacement cost $44.95
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Art in the middle grades emphasizes the transition from elementary school to high school approaches to art. This includes learning to develop and communicate personal ideas in art, observational drawing, color and painting, self evaluation and habits of mind necessary for success in art production and other areas of life. The course incorporates art history, aesthetics and art criticism into studio-based units.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: There are two rules for our art classroom: be respectful, and be responsible, both of which will be fully discussed during the first week of class. Consequences for misbehavior are as follows:
-student warning/decision to make better behavior choices
-parental notification/detention
-referral to administration/detention/suspension
GRADING I: The standard Fulton County grading policies will be used:
90 and above = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
below 70 = F
Fulton County grading policy also states:
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
GRADING II:
All art projects will be graded on craftsmanship, composition, time and effort and that project’s unique objectives. Grades will be weighted as follows:
Assignments/Journal 30% Written tests 25% Sketchbook 20%
Major projects 15% Participation, safety, care & use of materials 10%
HOMEWORK: Homework will be necessary as follows: studying for tests, working on sketchbooks and keeping caught up on any class assignments not finished during class time.
MAKE-UP WORK: Students are responsible for making up missed work. Students will have one day per day of absence to make up work that was missed during class while they were absent.

THE FOUR DISCIPLINES OF ART EDUCATION
These four disciplines of study will be integrated into the units of study for the nine weeks:
*ART HISTORY—exploration of the artistic heritage of many cultures
*ART CRITICISM—analysis of qualities and features of art
*AESTHETICS—thinking about art and making informed judgments
about art
*ART PRODUCTION—the making of art
OVERVIEW OF THE NINE WEEKS
INTRODUCTION: Syllabus, rules and procedures.
FOUNDATIONS: The how’s and whys of art; functions, themes, subjects and styles. The elements of art and principles of design, vocabulary and composition.
PRETESTS: Pretests on both written knowledge and applied art skills will be ongoing throughout the nine weeks. Written assessments will be based on mastery of content and applied art skills will be individual and based on each students personal growth.
DRAWING AND PAINTING UNIT: Students will learn to draw and paint with an emphasis on working from observation. Contour line and value drawing, color mixing, and color theory will be explored.
SCULPTURE UNIT: Students will learn about the principles of design. Students will then work in competitive teams to challenge one another to create the most aesthetically pleasing abstract sculpture based on solving a specific design problem. They will judge their own and also their peer’s sculptures based on the design criteria they develop.
SKETCHBOOKS: Students will complete sketchbooks based on what is learned in class and their own personal vision that will reflect what they have learned about as well as promote the exploration of various different media and approaches.
